St. Michael's Church, Csempekopács

St. Michael's Church in Csempeszkopács is an outstanding memory of 13th-century country architecture. The nave and the shrine were built around 1250. This was the first construction period: the steeple was attached to the body of the church later. Bricks and tombstone fragments from Roman times were excavated from its brick walls supporting the allegation that a building of some sort had stood here as early as in Roman times. The Romanesque state of the building can be reconstructed: its nave and semi-circular shaped shrine still corresponds to the state established in the mid-13th century. Its valuable artifacts date from the Baroque age: the wooden frame of the altarpiece contains the statue of St. Michael at its top. István Dorffmaister painted the altarpiece depicting the Holy Trinity.
