Szombathely Cathedral

Szombathely Cathedral

Bishop János Szily had Hungary's third largest church built to replace the demolished castle church and palace, which is the capital work of the architect, Menyhért Hefele. Its floor plan is the shape of a cross with an elongated shrine section and short transepts wings. This is the place where Adolf Kuncz and physicist Lóránd Eötvös repeated their pendulum experiment proving that the Earth is revolving. The Cathedral was severely damaged in a bomb raid during World War II and only a small fragment of the wonderful ceiling frescos and altarpieces was saved. The segmented restoration of the Cathedral is still underway.
